A vital centre for the recovery of wild flora and fauna in Fuerteventura

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Works and Machinery service, has initiated a process of enhancement at the La Oliva Biological Station. This initiative is part of the ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ programme, described by the President of the Cabildo, Lola García, as “an ambitious programme for the conservation and beautification of every corner of the island.”

Programme Overview

Blas Acosta, the councillor for Works and Machinery, explains that the ‘Beautiful’ programme includes, in addition to cleaning and clearing actions in natural spaces, small projects that significantly improve the quality of locations, such as the Biological Station.

About the Biological Station

The La Oliva Biological Station serves as a centre for the recovery of wild flora and fauna and boasts facilities such as a necropsy room and an educational classroom.

Details of the Works

The works are located within the current La Oliva Biological Station, specifically in the car park, the area adjacent to the storage facility, the open space by the white tamarisk, and the section designated for the Canarian Garden exhibition.

The main actions planned are three:

.- Installation of various shaded areas to enhance user comfort, which will involve improving the space and installing pergolas.

.- Creation of an accessible path from the Canarian Garden to the Nature Classroom. This will require levelling and adapting the terrain to minimise existing slopes, ensuring a stable base for later paving. The surface will be designed for comfortable transit, particularly for individuals with reduced mobility.

.- Preparation of the site for a new parking area next to the storage facility. Preliminary work will include cleaning and removing all stored items. Once the area is cleared, the terrain will be levelled to eliminate any unevenness. Following this, filling and compacting will be undertaken using granular material.

Long-term Commitment

The ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ initiative commissioned by Blas Acosta’s department from Gesplan includes actions over 15 months, spanning from 2024 to 2025. During both years, four million euros from the local budget will be invested in nearly a hundred “close-to-home actions” that directly impact the conservation of the natural environment, the positive perception of visitors, and the quality of life for residents.
