The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Teguise secured approval at this month’s ordinary plenary for their motion to revive traditional cochinilla farming in Guatiza and Mala. Socialist councillor Jenifer Galán expressed, “The cochinilla is part of our history, landscape, and identity, and we cannot allow it to disappear, nor the state of many of its farms.”

Galán emphasised that the Mexican cochinilla plague and the lack of generational change “have jeopardised over 200 years of tradition and a landscape that is a hallmark of Lanzarote.”
