Tourists visiting Scotland are being encouraged to use the so-called “T plates”, a measure aimed at improving road safety.

According to Daily Mail, these badges have a design similar to the plates used by novice drivers in the UK (the well-known L and P plates), but in this case, they feature a large green “T” alongside the word “tourist”.

The aim is to alert other road users that the person driving may not be accustomed to driving on the left, as is the case in much of continental Europe or the United States.

Initiative Born from a “Horrible” Experience in Tenerife

The initiative was spearheaded by Robert Marshall, a hotelier from Kingussie, after he experienced what he described as a “horrible” time driving in Tenerife.

In an interview with BBC Radio Scotland, he recounted that upon approaching roundabouts or junctions, “I found myself on the wrong side of the road,” and admitted he told his partner: “I wish people knew I was a tourist.”
