The PSOE of Puerto del Rosario, through its general secretary and spokesperson, Tacoremi Gutiérrez, held a working meeting with Benito Núñez, the General Secretary of Air and Maritime Transport from the Ministry of Transport. The meeting was also attended by the Senator for Fuerteventura, Paloma Hernández, and the Insular Director of the General Administration of the State, María Jesús de la Cruz. This encounter coincided with the official visit of the ministerial representative to Fuerteventura to assess the progress of strategic operations underway at the island’s port and airport. Guaranteed air connectivity despite Ryanair’s departure
The withdrawal of Ryanair from several Spanish airports will not negatively impact Fuerteventura or the Canary Islands as a whole. Following the cuts made by the Irish airline, carriers such as Vueling, Binter, Iberia Express, and Wizz Air have already enhanced their operations with new routes, additional frequencies, and an increase in capacity exceeding one million seats nationwide.
Specifically in the Canary Islands, Binter has announced 10 direct flights to Seville commencing from 1 December, while Vueling is bolstering its schedule with nearly 900,000 seats from Tenerife North and 578,000 from Santiago de Compostela. Additionally, Iberia Express and Wizz Air have added around 30,000 extra seats in the archipelago, with over a million seats on offer to and from the islands, respectively.
“The gaps left by Ryanair are being instantly filled by other companies, demonstrating that the Canary Islands remain a strategic and in-demand destination,” emphasised Tacoremi Gutiérrez.
Investments in Fuerteventura Airport
El Matorral Airport is set to undergo significant modernisation of its boarding bridges, with an investment of 9.5 million euros planned between 2025 and 2027.
The improvements involve the complete replacement of several bridges and the refurbishment of others, many of which have been in use since 1997, to ensure safety, efficiency, and comfort for passengers. The works will be conducted in phases and during off-peak hours to minimise disruption to airport traffic.
Moreover, the PSOE reminds that the airport fee of 0.68 euros per passenger does not hinder connectivity or the competitiveness of the airport, as it is allocated to fund these investments and improvements to the AENA network.
New Dock at the Port of Puerto del Rosario
Another strategic project underway is the construction of the new commercial dock at Puerto del Rosario, with the preliminary act already signed. The project, awarded at 40.6 million euros with an execution timeline of 17 months, will expand the port’s capacity, improve shelter from swell, and free up space for container traffic and cruise ships.
This initiative, funded by European FEDER funds, responds to the sustained growth in commercial and passenger traffic over the past decade, during which the port’s activity has tripled.
“The port of Puerto del Rosario is essential for the supply and economic development of the island. With this project, we are taking a decisive step to reinforce its role as a gateway for goods and supplies to Fuerteventura,” stated Benito Núñez.
Socialist commitment to the island’s infrastructure
Tacoremi Gutiérrez emphasised that these actions—both at the port and the airport—are the result of management by the socialist government and the PSOE’s commitment to the economic and logistical development of Fuerteventura.
“The modernisation of our infrastructure guarantees the future of the island. The PSOE will continue to advocate for projects that generate employment, improve competitiveness, and ensure Fuerteventura’s connectivity,” concluded the socialist spokesperson.
