Agents from the Civil Guard, part of the Traffic Safety Investigation Unit of the Canary Islands Traffic Sector (UNIS – GIAT), received a report accompanied by videos showing a vehicle’s speedometer reading 226 km/h.

Following analysis of the footage, the agents from the Traffic Safety Investigation Unit of the Civil Guard of the Canary Islands (UNIS – GIAT) proceeded to carry out the necessary inquiries to identify the driver and the vehicle involved.

As a result of these efforts, the driver was identified, along with the details of the vehicle they were operating. They are now being investigated for a suspected offence against Road Safety for driving a motor vehicle at a speed exceeding the legally permitted limit on interurban roads by more than 80 km/h, as well as for a suspected charge of reckless driving with a blatant disregard for the safety of others.

It is also important to note that speed has a direct impact on the occurrence and severity of road accidents. Higher driving speeds exponentially increase both the frequency and seriousness of incidents.

Applicable Regulations

According to Article 379 of the Penal Code, driving in excess of the speed limit by more than 80 km/h on interurban roads can result in a prison sentence of 3 to 6 months, a fine of 6 to 12 months, or community service ranging from 31 to 90 days, in addition to a suspension of the right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds for a period of 1 to 4 years. Reckless driving, as defined in Article 381 of the Spanish Penal Code, is punishable by imprisonment of two to five years and a fine of twelve to twenty-four months.

The investigative proceedings related to the matter have been compiled and submitted to the Investigating Court on duty of the judicial district of Granadilla de Abona (Santa Cruz de Tenerife).
