Tenerife Council Issues Ban on Open Fires in Recreational Areas Due to High-Temperature Alert
The Insular Corporation implements level 1 measures and allows access to trails and forest tracks on the island
The use of machinery that could cause sparks and the use of pyrotechnic materials in risk areas is prohibited
The Tenerife Council is implementing level 1 measures for wildfire prevention starting tomorrow, 16th September 2025, in light of the wildfire risk alert issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government, as part of the Special Civil Protection and Emergency Attention Plan for Wildfires in the Canary Autonomous Community (INFOCA).
All open fires in recreational areas and outdoors—including barbecues, bonfires, gas cookers—are prohibited. Additionally, the use of any machinery or tools that may emit sparks (such as strimmers, welding equipment, spark-generating machines, or cutting tools) and the use of any pyrotechnic materials in risk areas is forbidden. Furthermore, smoking is prohibited in recreational areas, camping zones, campsites, paths, lookouts, and other public facilities located in woodlands.
Permitted activities include movement along the island’s tracks and trails, forest harvesting, and hunting. However, the Council strongly recommends avoiding and not staying in forest areas while the alert situation is active, along with taking extra precautions throughout the island in any activities that could potentially cause fires. The restrictions related to level 1 wildfire prevention measures will remain in place until the alert situation is lifted.
