San Miguel de Abona now boasts a new benchmark in sustainability and cultural values. Cristo León, a practitioner of Canarian wrestling and a budding tourism informant, has been appointed as an ambassador for Soy Canary Green, an initiative launched by the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC) to promote a tourism model that is more respectful of the environment.

The mayor, Arturo González, states that having young people like Cristo is a privilege for the municipality, as it demonstrates that “Canarian wrestling and respect for the environment can go hand in hand.” González emphasises that this appointment serves as an “example of how the identity of San Miguel can be projected towards a responsible tourism model.”

The Councillor for Tourism, Laura Paiz, highlights the ability of our youth to serve as ambassadors for a tourism model that protects the natural environment while simultaneously reinforcing our traditions.

Cristo León embodies a new generation that advocates for coherence between values, culture, and sustainability. In this regard, at the training facilities where he practices, the municipal wrestling arena – “Tomás J. González Martín“, responsible practices such as the use of solar energy and efficient resource management have been implemented.
In his role as an ambassador, Cristo León joins a network of young individuals promoting mindful tourism, connected to local identity and committed to preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the islands.

Canary Green

Canary Green is an initiative driven by the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC), aimed at preserving the natural, cultural, and social value of the Canary Islands, while promoting a new tourism model that is more sustainable, participative, and conscious.
