The Government of the Canary Islands, in collaboration with the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, will hold an informative meeting on the detection and prevention of grapevine phylloxera, aimed at the island’s wine sector. The event will take place on Monday, 22nd September, at 17:30, in Room B of the Fuerteventura Palace of Training and Congresses. The session will feature the participation of the Deputy Minister for the Primary Sector, Eduardo García Cabello.
At the end of July, the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Tenerife detected outbreaks of grapevine phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae) on the island of Tenerife. Although no cases have been identified thus far in Fuerteventura, it is essential to maintain vigilance as a preventive measure, ensuring a rapid response should it be necessary to activate the protocol.
Farmers and vineyard owners who observe any potential issues can report them to the Unit of Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing of the Cabildo in Puerto del Rosario, via the phone numbers 928 532 035 or 928 531 184, or by email at [email protected] and [email protected].
Reports can also be made to the Agency of Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing in Gran Tarajal, by calling 928 870 782 or via email at [email protected].
Farmers are urged to monitor their vineyards closely for symptoms such as galls or nodules on roots, lesions or swellings on leaves, and general weakening of the plant. Any suspicious signs should be reported immediately, even if unconfirmed.
Additionally, it is advised not to transfer tools, soil, or plant material between plots, as the pest can easily spread through such movements.
