The General Directorate of Public Health of the Canary Health Service (SCS) has issued a yellow alert due to health risks in Lanzarote, as a result of the extreme temperature episode affecting the Canary Islands. Maximum temperatures of up to 38ºC are expected, with Thursday, 18 September, predicted to be the day of highest risk.
Most Affected Areas
The municipalities most affected in Lanzarote will be Arrecife, Haría, San Bartolomé, Teguise, Tías, Tinajo, and Yaiza. Special attention is advised for vulnerable populations, including children under the age of 4, individuals over 65, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses or who engage in intense physical activity outdoors.
Recommendations
The alert will remain in place at least until Saturday, 20 September. The following recommendations are advised:
- Stay Hydrated: Maintain constant hydration and avoid alcohol, energy drinks, or highly sugary beverages.
- Light Diet: Opt for light meals, including fruits, vegetables, and salads.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: Limit exposure during the hottest hours of the day and prioritise outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon.
- Cool Off Indoors: Stay in cooler indoor environments and limit time outside.
