María Dolores Corujo: “Today more than ever, we cannot remain silent in the face of a genocide that has already been recognised by the UN”
The Socialist Party of Lanzarote has called upon citizens to join the night march for Palestine taking place this Thursday, 18th September, at 20:30 in Arrecife, departing from the old Cabildo headquarters (Casa Amarilla), located at Calle León y Castillo, 6. Participants are encouraged to bring a lit candle as a symbol of mourning, remembrance, and resistance against the horror.
The general secretary of the PSOE in Lanzarote and congress member, María Dolores Corujo, emphasised the importance of standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people “at a time when the international outcry for justice is more necessary than ever.” Corujo recalled that on the same Tuesday, the independent commission of inquiry from the United Nations classified the attacks by Israel on Gaza as acts of genocide.
“We are not just talking about a humanitarian tragedy; we are discussing crimes that have been documented and acknowledged as genocide by international organisations. In light of this, no democrat can look the other way. Silence makes us complicit. Today more than ever, we must raise our voices for Palestine,” she asserted.
The socialist leader confirmed that her party would be present at the march and encouraged the Lanzarote community to join “with respect, firmness, and hope for peace.”
“We want our candles to illuminate the memory of those who are no longer with us, but also to reflect the commitment of those of us who still believe in dignity, human rights, and international justice,” Corujo added.
The PSOE of Lanzarote reminds us that it has consistently maintained a clear position in defence of the Palestinian people and denounces the lack of decisiveness from some governments and institutions in the face of escalating violence that has destroyed thousands of civilian lives, particularly those of women, boys, and girls.
Furthermore, the socialist party highlights that the government of Pedro Sánchez has been the only one in all of Europe to implement firm and courageous measures against the genocide, such as a permanent arms embargo on Israel, the closure of ports to vessels carrying Israeli military fuel, a ban on individuals implicated in war crimes, and an increase in humanitarian support for Palestine and UNRWA.
“There can be no peace without justice. There can be no justice if genocide is permitted. From Lanzarote, we want to join the global call demanding an immediate end to this barbarism,” she concluded.
