PSOE Applauds Ministry’s Action Against Illegal Holiday Rentals
The Fuerteventura Socialist Party (PSOE) commends the work of the Ministry of Housing, which has uncovered 934 illegal holiday rentals on the island. This issue directly impacts the availability and rental prices of housing in Fuerteventura, affecting local families struggling to secure a home.
Concerns Over Rental Market
PSOE deputy for Fuerteventura, Manuel Hernández, highlighted that “there is a problem of political ‘blindness’ within the Department of Tourism regarding the diminishing availability of rental housing and the subsequent irrational price hikes. This blindness, represented by Councillor Jéssica de León, has exacerbated the housing crisis in Fuerteventura due to the irresponsible management of holiday rental regulations.”
Statistics on Illegal Rentals
La Oliva ranks as the fourth municipality in the Canary Islands with the highest number of properties marketed for tourism without complying with the law (484), followed by Antigua (216), Pájara (116), Tuineje (60), and Puerto del Rosario (58).
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda (Mivau) has notified major digital platforms of the existence of 8,698 illegal tourist flats in the Canary Islands, of which 934 are located in Fuerteventura. These platforms have been instructed to immediately remove these listings from their websites, thereby eliminating them from the tourist market.
Effective Measures Proposed
The Socialist deputy for Fuerteventura views the order to remove listings for these properties as “a concrete, effective, and real measure,” in contrast to the uncertainty surrounding the Canary Islands Government (CC-PP) concerning housing policies. “We are unsure of their actions, if they are doing anything at all, because even measures as obvious as addressing illegal rentals have been addressed by the Ministry from Madrid.”
