Islénior Offers ‘Film Afternoons’ to Nearly 1,000 Older Adults

The Social Action Councillor, Águeda Fumero, described the initiative as “a meeting space that offers culture, leisure and emotional well-being, promoting active ageing”

The First Comprehensive Care Plan for older adults in Tenerife, Islénior, continues to expand across the island with new initiatives, including the launch of the film series ‘Film Afternoons’, aimed at “encouraging socialisation and a sense of community among the elderly of the island.”

The Social Action Councillor, Águeda Fumero, accompanied by the CEO of Sinpromi, Adal García, and the representative of the Film Talks Association, Ramón González Trujillo, presented this series today (Wednesday 17), which will feature five screenings at Multicines Tenerife until the end of the year, involving nearly 1,000 older adults from across the island.

Águeda Fumero emphasised that ‘Film Afternoons’ “is intended to become a meeting space where culture, leisure and emotional well-being play a central role” and asserted that “film is a wonderful tool that not only entertains but also evokes memories and connects generations.”

This initiative also promotes “inclusive access to cinematic culture” through screenings of adapted and accessible classics, removing any physical, sensory or cognitive barriers, thanks to adapted venues, subtitles, pictograms, and signage.

In addition to the screenings, ‘Film Afternoons’ offers older adults discussions and participatory talks, “creating safe spaces for them to share experiences and emotions, enhancing their emotional well-being,” explained the CEO of Sinpromi, Adal García, who noted that “this initiative is part of the third axis of Islénior, which focuses on the social environment and aims to foster socialisation, inclusive access to leisure and culture, and the promotion of collective memory.”

The initiative has received support from the entities Film Talks and Alda Projects, both of which have extensive experience in managing screenings, debates, and dissemination, as well as initiatives related to intergenerational creativity.

This cultural proposal uses film as a tool to strengthen social integration and psychological well-being among older adults, in line with the Cabildo’s commitment to equality and addressing the diverse needs of the senior community.
