High temperatures close to 40 degrees make it unsafe to hold the pilgrimage for participants

Suspension of the Pilgrimage

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, in response to the maximum temperature alert issued by the Canary Islands government, has suspended the traditional pilgrimage from Betancuria to Vega del Río Palmas, which is held to celebrate the festival of Our Lady of La Peña.

Rationale for the Decision

Temperatures nearing 40 degrees render it unviable to conduct the pilgrimage safely, leading to the cancellation of the route.

Alternative Celebration

However, the traditional offering to the patron saint will still take place at 19:00 hours at the chapel of Vega de Río Palmas, the home of the patron saint.
