Juan Monzón: “This tournament not only promotes sports participation among our seniors, but also strengthens community bonds, social engagement, and the preservation of our cherished traditions.”
The Insular Sports Service has announced that preparations are underway for the 24th edition of the “Abuelos Conejeros” Wood Canarian Ball Tournament, one of the island’s most emblematic competitions with deep social and cultural roots. This year, the event will take place on the courts set up in front of the Arrecife Civic Centre.
Coordination Meeting
Juan Monzón, the Councillor for Physical Activity and Sports, recently held a coordination meeting with the seniors’ councillors from the seven municipalities on the island to finalise the details for this special event. During the meeting, feedback was collected from the councils to further improve the organisation for this new edition.
Registration Details
Starting from 25th September, interested teams will be able to register through the seniors’ departments of their respective municipalities. Once the registration period closes, the match schedule will be created, with contests taking place in the capital from November until May of next year.
“This tournament not only promotes sports participation among our seniors, but also strengthens community bonds, social engagement, and the preservation of our cherished traditions,” Councillor Juan Monzón stated, expressing his gratitude to the seven municipalities for “their involvement and collaboration in organising the tournament.”
Legacy of the Tournament
After more than twenty editions and nearing its silver anniversary, the “Abuelos Conejeros” Wood Canarian Ball Tournament has established itself as a benchmark for promoting active ageing in Lanzarote. Each year, it brings together hundreds of participants and stands as a genuine example of sport, tradition, and camaraderie.
