Taborno and Casas de la Cumbre: Key Participants in the First Weekend of the Anaga Biofest

According to the Natural Resources Councillor, Blanca Pérez, “we will continue working to protect this area and to ensure that such events teach how to care for our environment in an educational manner.”

The activities are planned under participatory governance criteria to integrate local community groups from the Massif.

The fifth edition of the Anaga Biofest kicks off this weekend with a programme resulting from collaborative efforts with local community groups from Anaga, such as the AAVV of San José de Taborno. This initiative reinforces the commitment to fostering community ties throughout the year. It is a project of participatory governance that highlights the living memory of the Macizo de Anaga, showcasing its traditional knowledge and dedication to the care and protection of this unique territory.

Organised by Ecotouristing Ideas Regenerativas, the Anaga Biofest receives sponsorship from the Tourism and Employment Councillor of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Jéssica de León, through Tourism of the Canary Islands; the Cabildo of Tenerife, via the Area of Natural Resources and Tenerife Tourism; as well as the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, and Tegueste, alongside the Fundación CajaCanarias.

This weekend’s programme features a variety of activities that combine gastronomy, hiking, and nature. Interested participants can visit the festival website (click HERE) for more information.

The Natural Resources Councillor, Blanca Pérez, stated, “It is essential for the Cabildo of Tenerife to seek tools to keep alive the tradition and identity of a unique environment like the Macizo de Anaga. We will continue to work to protect this area and to ensure that such events educate people on how to take care of our surroundings.”

The Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, noted that “this year’s edition of the Anaga Biofest is particularly special for us, as we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the declaration of the Macizo de Anaga as a Biosphere Reserve. This is reflected in the programme, which includes around twenty different activities. Thanks to the local associations of Taborno and Casas de La Cumbre, we will showcase the centuries-old traditions of the Anaga massif, reminding us of our own history.”

The festival director, Javier Tejera, highlighted that “our goal extends beyond a one-off event; we are particularly interested in weaving a collaborative network with the local residents to raise awareness of their values and history, ultimately highlighting all the potential that deserves to be cared for and known.”

10th Edition of the Borralla Potato Day

The Anaga Biofest also commemorates the tenth edition of the Borralla Potato Day, organised by the AAVV of San José de Taborno with the collaboration of the Cabildo of Tenerife. This special programme revolves around this unique product linked to the Macizo de Anaga. It begins with the organisation of workshops for the exchange of traditional seeds, seedling production with typical varieties, and local seed bombs, featuring active participation from the Fundación Santa Cruz Sostenible and the Canary Seed Network.

To further explore the uniqueness of this variety, an ethnographic route of the Borralla Potato in the Taborno neighbourhood will be conducted. This circular route will include a visit to a farm in the Taborno area, allowing participants to learn about the distinguishing characteristics of this variety from local farmers. This visit will be complemented by a tasting of cheese from a local livestock farm. The culinary proposal includes a cooking workshop titled ‘Borralla, Root of Anaga’, led by May Hernández from La Gangochera de Anaga in a participatory showcooking format.

A festive atmosphere will be enhanced by the Parrandas de Roque Negro and Malvasía de Taganana in the Taborno square, where all routes will conclude with a communal meal among hikers and locals to savour a selection of dishes featuring the Borralla potato as the main star.
