Pilgrimage in Honour of Our Lady of La Peña

Pilgrims from all corners of Fuerteventura have gathered at the Vega de Río Palmas for the festivities in honour of Our Lady of La Peña. As is customary every third weekend of September, the Sanctuary of the Virgin of La Peña hosted the traditional offering, attended by institutional representatives from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, all six municipalities, folkloric groups, and local associations.

Beginning of the Event

The event commenced with a performance by the Canary Federation of Juego del Palo. The offering from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura was led by the island president, Lola García, alongside the Canary Islands Government’s Tourism Minister, Jessica de León, who were accompanied by the Folkloric Group of Tetir.

Municipal Contributions

The offering was subsequently presented by the Ayuntamiento of Betancuria, joined by the Morro de la Cruz group, followed by the Ayuntamiento of Antigua with the senior centre’s rondalla, and the Ayuntamiento of Puerto del Rosario with A.F. La Pioná. The Ayuntamiento of Tuineje contributed with Parranda Manitaga and Grupo de Baile Farroga, while the Ayuntamiento of Pájara presented parranda La Sebada and the Ayuntamiento of La Oliva was also in attendance.

Other participants included the Amigos Parranderos of the Romería de La Peña, the Tefía Facay Residents’ Association, and the La Alcogida collective, along with parranda Merita La Pena, as well as a large group of civil protection volunteers from various municipalities.

Entertainment and Celebrations

Following the offering, the performance by ‘Parranda Son de Antaño’ took place, succeeded by the group ‘Que Chimba’, accompanied by fireworks and a grand dance featuring ‘Edwin Rivera and Orchestra’, ‘Grupo Arena’, and ‘Kandela’.
