Celebrations at Vega de Río Palmas
Pilgrims from all corners of Fuerteventura have gathered at Vega de Río Palmas for the Festivals in Honour of Our Lady of La Peña. As is tradition every third weekend in September, the Sanctuary of the Virgin of La Peña hosted the customary offering, with institutional participation from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and all six municipalities, along with folkloric groups and local associations.
Event Highlights
The event commenced with a display by the Canary Island Federation of Juego del Palo. The offering from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura was headed by island president Lola García and Councillor for Tourism Jessica de León, accompanied by the Tetir Folkloric Group.
Subsequently, the municipalities presented their offerings: Betancuria with the Morro de la Cruz group; Antigua with the ensemble from its Senior Centre; Puerto del Rosario with A.F. La Pioná; Tuineje with Parranda Manitaga and Grupo de Baile Farroga; Pájara with Parranda La Sebada; and La Oliva.
Other participants included the Amigos Parranderos from the Romería de La Peña, the Tefía Facay Neighbourhood Association, the La Alcogida collective, and the Merita La Pena group, along with numerous volunteers from civil protection across the various municipalities.
Festivities and Performances
Following the offering, the ‘Parranda Son de Antaño’ performed, followed by the group ‘Que Chimba’, along with fireworks and a grand dance featuring ‘Edwin Rivera and orchestra’, ‘Grupo Arena’, and ‘Kandela’.
