Tellado Advocates for Stricter Immigration Policy in Spain
The Secretary General of the Popular Party (PP), Miguel Tellado, advocated on Saturday during the opening of the political session of the PP in the Canary Islands, held in Tenerife, for the implementation of a “national immigration policy similar to those of neighbouring countries with governments of all political colours.”
He stressed that this policy should be based on “maintaining a tough stance against organised crime and illegal immigration.” According to him, the “current immigration policy under the government of Pedro Sánchez is being managed with an unacceptable level of frivolity and creates a reckless call effect that is having its consequences,” thus necessitating “a change in direction.”
Plan
Tellado stated that Spain requires “a plan that ensures we are on par with what other countries in our vicinity are doing, combining toughness with intelligence, planning, and resources to integrate those who arrive with the intention of contributing to the country.” He emphasised the need to “combat human trafficking and secure our borders,” as well as to “provide more resources to security forces.”
Furthermore, Tellado expressed his commitment to “comprehensive and effective immigration policies that involve all administrations and uphold the principle of equality.” He also assured that if Alberto Núñez Feijóo were to assume the presidency, “the immigration issue would be an absolute priority” and that the Canary Islands “would no longer be neglected by the government.”
Insecurity
Meanwhile, the regional leader of the PP and Vice President of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, highlighted the “insecurity of our coasts” due to “borders being wide open.” He pointed out the recent arrival of “boats with undocumented crew members and the persistent presence of narcotics vessels,” which he believes “demonstrates a lack of control and surveillance in the region.”
