The future management plan for the Teide National Park anticipates a ban on car access during specific time slots, during which visitors will only be allowed to travel by bus.

This was confirmed by the councillor from the Presidency of the Cabildo of Tenerife, José Miguel Ruano, who clarified that “limitations on private vehicle use will be established, but this does not constitute a complete ban.”

“There will be certain time slots where all mobility will be facilitated through buses, while in other slots, this will not be the case,” he added.

Cars Will Still Be Allowed in Teide

Additionally, the new management plan respects traditional practices such as beekeeping, under certain conditions, and improves aspects such as cycling on designated paths.

Ruano mentioned that the document, which the island corporation and the Government of the Canary Islands have been working on for over a year and a half, will be discussed on 29 September during the national park board meeting.

Both administrations are “in disagreement” with the basic document that originated during José Antonio Valbuena’s term as Councillor for Ecological Transition, Climate Change Mitigation and Territorial Planning.

The new document, José Miguel Ruano emphasised, “is a significant improvement over the previous one, which restrictively limited access to Teide and enjoyment of the national park.”

It aims to “establish a sustainable island mobility plan,” where “some provisions are temporary and others are related to the future plan that the Cabildo will establish.”

In his view, the new document represents “a remarkable advance,” although he noted that its approval rests with the Government of the Canary Islands, “most likely before December.”
