PP President Astrid Pérez Criticises Government for Failing to Deliver Promised Security Reinforcements in Lanzarote

The president of the Lanzarote PP, Astrid Pérez, states that she “shares the discontent” of the Civil Guard professionals “over the repeated failures” of the Sánchez Government, which “has once again deceived the people of Lanzarote by announcing a reinforcement of security forces that does not exist.”

The president of the Popular Party of Lanzarote, Astrid Pérez, has denounced the “lack of commitment” from Pedro Sánchez’s Government towards the Canary Islands, particularly Lanzarote, following years of “unsuccessful” demands for an increase in the number of State Security Forces personnel.

Astrid Pérez considers it a “political sham” that the PSOE continues to toy with the needs of the people of Lanzarote “by making promises that they repeatedly fail to keep”. “Citizens are tired of hearing the Canary Islands Minister, Torres, turn a blind eye when it comes to guaranteeing security and alleviating the heavy workload faced by both the National Police and the Civil Guard, or making announcements and promises that he cannot fulfil.”

In this context, the leader of the PP “shares the discontent expressed” by the Spanish Association of Civil Guards (AEGC), which accuses the former president of the Canary Islands Government, now Territorial Policy Minister Angel Víctor Torres, of “lying and deceiving Canarians by announcing new personnel when the reality is that they are the same civil guards who began their training two months ago and do not represent a real increase in staffing.”

Astrid reminds us that the Socialist Minister previously estimated that there would be 169 new personnel for the Canary Islands, of which 20 would be allocated to Lanzarote. For Pérez, “this behaviour confirms what we have been saying for some time: Canarians can no longer trust this government or Torres when it comes to defending our land’s interests in Madrid.” “We are dealing with a minister who, even during his time at the head of the Canary Executive, demonstrated absolute subservience to Pedro Sánchez’s party interests.”

In this regard, she points out that “neither before nor now have we seen them concerned about the workload saturation affecting both the Civil Guard and the National Police due to the shortage of personnel required to meet the needs of an island with more than 160,000 residents, receiving around 3 million tourists each year and also having to address the services arising from the migration crisis and the arrival of migrant boats on our shores.”
