Excitement Soars at the XXXII Puerto Calero Marlin Cup

Puerto Calero once again hosted the premier event for sport fishing in Lanzarote, the XXXII Puerto Calero Marlin Cup. This year’s tournament will be remembered for its exciting moments and record figures: 16 strikes and 7 blue marlins reported, out of a total of 24 strikes over the two days of competition—an exceptional record that highlights the thrill of this edition.

Intense Final Day

The final day started with a bang. The vessel Papichulo opened the day’s account with a report of a blue marlin tagged by junior angler Luis Eduardo Ferrer, who was awarded for being the first junior to make a catch. Just a couple of hours later, at 12:50, Luyaira, helmed by Carmelo Pérez, achieved its second marlin of the tournament, placing it at the top of the leaderboard with 1,000 points, making it the favourite for victory.

Unexpected Turnaround

However, the excitement was just beginning. The vessel The Rodfather II, captained by Adrián Arcay, made a stunning comeback with two decisive strikes, the first at 13:26 and the second at 16:25, bringing its score to 1,500 points. This remarkable turnaround allowed it to clinch victory from Luyaira and win the title of champion of the XXXII Puerto Calero Marlin Cup. The third position was taken by El Pichón, captained by Xerach Bernardo Lucas, rounding off a fiercely contested podium.

Prestigious Prizes

The prizes matched the tournament’s prestige. The first-place winner received an annual insurance policy for a recreational vessel from Murimar Seguros, as well as entry to the World Championships in Costa Rica and a travel package worth 3,000 euros. The second-placed competitor received 3,000 euros in fuel, courtesy of DISA, along with a boat lift provided by Calero Marinas. Meanwhile, the third-place finisher, El Pichón, took home a gift voucher worth 2,500 euros for Simrad electronics, courtesy of Salitre Sport Fishing.

Célébration and Highlights

Following the trophy presentation, participants and their guests celebrated with a lively dinner at the Amura restaurant, which concluded with a themed party dedicated to La Vieja Habana, providing the perfect finale to an unforgettable edition.

The organisers emphasised that the high number of reported strikes—24 in total during the two days of the tournament—is an exceptional occurrence, showcasing the extraordinary richness of Lanzarote’s waters as a premier destination for big-game fishing.
