Autumn and Garden

–José Ángel Buesa —

Madam, it is twilight. It matters not if a sprout has opened in the rose bushes of the garden; still:

the terrible twilight of autumn has arrived,

which means a twilight that lingers all day.

Madam, it is autumn… Your last roses

are being stripped of their petals by an unnameable disillusion.

And indeed, there exists an autumn for all things,

and love and life are swept away by the wind.

not even tears. Henceforth, everything will be in vain;

for there is nothing sadder than a late sprout,

and love is but a handful of ashes…
