Jacobo Medina: “It was a commitment not only to the safety of the public but also to respecting the legacy of César Manrique, which is part of Lanzarote’s identity.”

The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Public Works Department, has completed the repair and maintenance work on the Juguete del Viento in Arrieta, a work by artist César Manrique, which is now fully operational at 100% capacity.

This intervention is part of the Maintenance and Conservation Plan for Public Works and Artistic Heritage on Highways, aimed at ensuring public safety and preserving the cultural and artistic legacy of the island.

Repair and Stabilisation

The work involved repairing the piece that detached last April due to a windstorm, as well as a comprehensive review of the sculptural ensemble to enhance its stability and durability.

“Today we can say that the Juguete del Viento in Arrieta is once again shining in all its glory. It was a commitment not only to public safety but also to honouring the legacy of César Manrique, which is part of Lanzarote’s identity,” stated Jacobo Medina, the Councillor for Public Works.

He further explained that the repair was carried out “with all guarantees.” “We sought the moment with the least wind to undertake the repair safely, protecting the personnel working in the area at all times,” he added.

Commitment to Cultural Heritage

Finally, the councillor emphasised the Cabildo’s commitment “to the conservation of cultural heritage.” “With this type of action, we continue to demonstrate that the artistic heritage of Lanzarote is not neglected but is cared for, preserved, and valued. This is our commitment, and we will continue to fulfil it,” he asserted.

The sculpture, nearly nine metres tall and located at the roundabout leading to Arrieta, was designed by Manrique as a tribute to the wind, one of the island’s most characteristic elements.
