Proposal for a Municipal Catalogue of Empty Homes
The Popular Party of Fuerteventura will soon present a motion in the municipalities of La Oliva, Pájara, and Puerto del Rosario for the creation of a municipal catalogue of empty homes. This proposal aims to address the impacts of the housing crisis affecting thousands of Canarians, amid the shortage of public housing and a decline in construction on the island in recent years.
Statistics on Vacant Properties
According to recent data, there are over 200,000 vacant properties in the Canary Islands, many of which have exited the rental market since the implementation of Housing Law 12/2023. Some of these properties are designated for holiday rentals, for sale, or remain closed due to concerns about not being able to recover the home in the event of non-payment.
Benefits of an Updated Register
The PP of Fuerteventura believes that having an updated register will help identify these unoccupied homes, assess rehabilitation needs, and connect supply with the high rental demand on the island. Additionally, it will inform property owners about the fiscal incentives in the 2025 regional budget aimed at promoting the rehabilitation and rental of vacant properties.
A Call for Effective Policy
“The lack of information about vacant homes has so far hindered effective policy. With this catalogue, we can create an accurate diagnosis and develop programmes that move these homes back into the market, taking concrete steps to alleviate the housing emergency in Fuerteventura,” stated representatives from the island’s PP.
Expanding the Initiative
The party also hopes to extend this measure to other municipalities on the island, aiming for it to become a common policy that will contribute to improving access to housing throughout Fuerteventura.
