Fire Under Control After Gas Cylinder Explosion in Santa Lucía de Tirajana

The fire, which is now under control, broke out late on Sunday afternoon in El Ingenio following the “deflagration of a gas cylinder” in a traditional house. This incident caused flames to spread to the ravine area of the municipality.

Evacuated Residents Return Home

Residents evacuated due to the fire outbreak in Santa Lucía de Tirajana (Gran Canaria) have now returned to their homes after the blaze was brought under control. At least 40 individuals were forced to leave their properties on the evening of September 21 due to the flames.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García, some evacuees were able to return to their homes on Sunday. However, several families remained displaced due to the fire, which affected between 500 and 1,000 square metres of cane and palm vegetation at the bottom of the ravine.

Efficient Emergency Response

The fire originated late on Sunday afternoon in El Ingenio, following the explosion of a gas cylinder in a traditional house, which led to its spread to the municipal ravine area.

García praised the swift action of the emergency services from the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, who collaborated with the Guardia Civil, Local Police, and Civil Protection. Their efforts successfully mitigated personal injuries and prevented the fire from extending to the nearby palm grove or the cane field in Tirajana.

Call for Responsible Gas Cylinder Storage

The Mayor urged residents to consider the responsibilities associated with storing gas cylinders in homes, noting that some bottles are believed to have exploded, which could be linked to the fire’s origin in a cave house.
