After months of stagnation and a visibly deteriorated image at the main tourist access points in the Canary Islands, AENA has recently awarded the gardening services contract for the airports in South and North Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, and El Hierro.
The company Translimp Contract Ser has been selected as the new contractor responsible for maintaining green areas for one year, with a contract valued at €751,777 net, as stated on AENA’s official public procurement portal.

This contract follows a previous tender that was declared void, which extended a situation of neglect and labour conflict for months.

The affected workers have confirmed to this publication that they are waiting to sign the subrogation letter, with their integration into the new company anticipated for 1st October.

The newly contracted company has already expressed willingness to negotiate the inherited debts from the previous company, Amena Hispánica, which owed employees up to five months’ salary: “They talked to us about it without us even asking. They have shown a willingness to resolve it,” stated one of the union representatives.

The former company was flagged for non-payments and poor management, prompting AENA to terminate the contract in January this year due to “repeated breaches”.

EVIDENT DETERIORATION

The decline did not go unnoticed by those arriving or departing from the Islands, generating criticism from unions and representatives of the tourism sector, who viewed this situation as detrimental to the image that the Canary Islands project as a destination.

Throughout the conflict, the vast majority of workers requested medical leave for depression due to uncertainty and lack of resources.

Simultaneously, Amena Hispánica attempted to implement a temporary redundancy plan for employees.

However, the process was chaotic: the video call in which the measure was communicated was made by a representative who left the company that same day.

The awarding of the new contract finally opens a pathway to resolve a conflict that has lasted almost a year.
