The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura urges the political groups represented in the island’s institutions to reach a consensus on motions regarding peace in Gaza and the West Bank. To this end, the Insular Executive Committee of the PSOE agreed in its meeting yesterday that the socialist groups in the municipalities and the Cabildo should present a motion in support of the Palestinian people and in favour of peace in Gaza and the West Bank, thereby compelling debate, consensus, and voting.
In this vein, the first point of the motion, which will soon be conveyed to the municipalities and the Cabildo, calls on the PSOE of Fuerteventura to endorse the position of the Spanish Government in defence of peace. It also asks for support for the UN Summit on the two-state solution and respect for International Humanitarian Law, recognising Palestine as a state, as a significant majority of UN member states are currently doing.
José Cabrera, Secretary of Municipal Policy for the PSOE of Fuerteventura, states that “the institutions of Fuerteventura have a moral obligation to demonstrate to the residents their position on the developments of this conflict, which transcends the Middle East. It is essential to publicly support the Spanish Government in its international efforts to prioritise peace and safeguard the civilian population that has fallen victim to the war.”
“To remain on the sidelines during such a dark chapter in humanity’s history is simply immoral,” José Cabrera adds. “Therefore, we must take the floor, engage in debate, and achieve institutional consensus.”
The motion begins by recalling that the Socialist Party and the Spanish Government strongly condemned the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023. This unjustifiable terrorist act against Israel resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 hostages. In response to such barbarity, the PSOE has taken a stand.
This same sensitivity towards barbarity and cruelty against fellow human beings drives the PSOE to present this motion, given that the Israeli Government’s military response has led to a campaign of mass and disproportionate destruction, primarily affecting the Palestinian civilian population after nearly two years.
In Gaza, more than 65,000 individuals have been reported dead, including almost 18,500 children. Additionally, over 159,000 have been injured and nearly two million people have been displaced, many of them multiple times. They lack guaranteed access to food, clean water, medical care, or safe shelter. In the West Bank, attacks by armed illegal settlers have caused forced displacements, deaths, illegal expropriations, and the expansion of settlements in Palestinian territories.
Consequently, the Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC) has confirmed the first official famine in the history of the Middle East, with half a million people in a state of famine (IPC-5) and over a million in a state of emergency (IPC-4). Hunger, lack of water, and the collapse of the healthcare system have been weaponised. Furthermore, over 21,000 children have acquired some form of disability since the conflict began.
PSOE of Fuerteventura urges the need to reach consensus on motions concerning peace in Gaza and the West Bank.
