Arrecife Mayor and Island Councillor Review Urban Development Projects in Lanzarote

Mayor meets with regional councillor for Public Works to review progress on various projects in development

Maneje neighbourhood, with significant urban development featuring public housing, will have a new access road linking Tahíche and Arrecife

The Mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, and the regional Councillor for Public Works of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Jacobo Medina, held a working meeting at the Town Hall to oversee and discuss the progress of various projects that are either completed or in the drafting phase by the Public Works Department for execution in the capital of Lanzarote.

During this meeting, the Mayor, who is also directly responsible for the Public Works Department at the Town Hall, and the regional councillor reviewed the status of key projects currently underway. These projects are funded at the regional level through the Insular Cooperation Plans or are due for upcoming tendering in other cases.

Transport and Urban Development

Throughout the meeting, both public officials analysed critical projects that will enhance mobility, accessibility, and urban modernisation in Arrecife. They discussed the plans for the comprehensive renovation of Calle Triana and a second phase in Manolo Millares, from the access points in the former area of the Municipal Cemetery to the intersection with the Antonio Zerolo School.

Another significant project proposed by the Public Works Department, led by Councillor Jacobo Medina, focuses on creating new access routes from the Tahíche road into Arrecife. This will facilitate access to the neighbourhood of Maneje, which is experiencing substantial urban growth with the construction of 400 new public housing units, 201 of which are currently under construction.

Infrastructure Improvements

During this meeting, the Mayor also gained insight into the progress of the project to improve the road linking Costa Teguise and Arrecife via the Los Mármoles and Lloret areas. Additionally, there will be enhancements to the main entry routes into the city, including works on the LZ-101 (entry via Puerto Naos) and the LZ-20 (accesses to the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital), aimed at delivering a more polished, modern look in line with the urban transformation of Arrecife.

Regarding public space investment, Jacobo Medina informed the Mayor that “the renovation of the Plaza de la Iglesia de San Ginés is in its final phase and will be completed by early November, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy a revitalised space suited to current needs.”

Mayor Yonathan de León positively reflected on the collaboration with the Public Works Department of the Cabildo, emphasising that these planned projects “address the necessity to transform Arrecife into a more modern, accessible, and revitalised city for both residents and the thousands of visitors.”

Future Coordination

Meanwhile, Councillor Jacobo Medina highlighted that this visit to Arrecife “initiates a new series of meetings that will take place in the last quarter of the year with all the municipalities on the island, aimed at following up on ongoing works and coordinating those that will be implemented immediately.”

“We are strengthening collaboration between institutions because each municipality requires specific solutions and projects tailored to its realities. In the case of Arrecife, as the island’s capital, it necessitates additional efforts to meet the expectations of its residents and fulfill its role as the economic and social engine of Lanzarote, where nearly fifty percent of the island’s population resides,” stated Medina.

The Public Works Department of the Cabildo reiterates its commitment to improving infrastructure and modernising all municipalities on the island, implementing investments that enhance the quality of life for citizens and project Lanzarote as a modern, sustainable, and accessible destination.
