Local Police Recover Stolen Backpack with Significant Cash

On Friday evening, a patrol from the Local Police of Santa Cruz de Tenerife discovered an abandoned backpack on a bench in the foyer of the city’s Transport Interchange. The bag was reported to the Lost Property service, where it was determined to contain personal belongings and a sum of cash amounting to €22,250, neatly stored in envelopes.

The owner, an 85-year-old man, arrived at the police station yesterday morning. After necessary checks were carried out, he successfully reclaimed both the money and his possessions. He indicated that the cash was from a recent inheritance.

Previous Incident

On Saturday, the elderly gentleman had previously contacted the Local Police, but showed signs of confusion and was unable to explain his loss or provide personal details. On that occasion, a family member was located to care for him.

Verification and Return of Belongings

On Monday, at the Lost Property service, his identity as the owner of the backpack was confirmed. In his presence, the money was counted, and some banking details he provided were verified. Subsequently, a patrol escorted him to a bank to deposit the recovered amount.

Commendation for Police Efforts

The Councillor for Security, Gladis de León, praised the officers for “the work they have done in this case as well as many others in public service, where we support our residents and visitors in situations that require intervention.”
