The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura has once again called for moderation regarding security issues from political spokespersons. The data and actions of the Spanish Government support a significant improvement in the human and material resources of the Guardia Civil in Fuerteventura, starting with the establishment of a Commander position and the addition of nearly 40 trainee officers on the island. The next qualitative leap, planned by the Ministry of the Interior before the end of the year, is the expansion of the Guardia Civil’s structure on the island. PSOE Fuerteventura emphasises that the Guardia Civil has gained personnel and command structure.

José Cabrera, Secretary for Municipal Policy of the PSOE of Fuerteventura, reiterates that, “the Socialist Party supports the work of the State Security Forces and Corps; a professional effort that generates safety and a ‘perception of safety’, a vital aspect for the successful development of economic activity on the island and for family incomes.”

In this regard, he denounces the “deliberate political dishonesty” practiced by some spokespersons, which negatively impacts job creation and confidence in the destination. “There is no room to hide behind ignorance anymore, as these spokespersons knowingly craft misleading headlines at the expense of many local residents’ employment and business security.”

Of the nearly 40 trainee officers who were deployed to Fuerteventura before the summer, five have continued their training in different locations (with specialised training in specific areas such as Borders or the GRS), while the rest remain active on the island.

Fuerteventura now has a Commander position, which elevates the strategic importance of the island within the Ministry of the Interior. This path has already been taken by Chiclana de La Frontera, Aranjuez, Cartagena, Burriana, La Coruña, El Ejido, Calviá, and Playa de Las Américas in Tenerife. The next step is the expansion of the Guardia Civil’s catalogue and the creation of specialised units, similar to what has occurred in those other locations that were recognised with a Commander position.

The Guardia Civil covers public safety in 65 percent of the island’s geography and serves 82.54 percent of the registered population and nearly all hotel facilities. Therefore, the Socialist Party of Fuerteventura insists that the roadmap for public safety must be managed with “discretion and institutional loyalty”, as has been done thus far, and not by generating murky debates that create unease among the population and local economic sectors. “In public safety, perception is as important as reality,” reminds José Cabrera.
