The Cabildo of Tenerife Welcomes European Teams to Supervise the Island’s Response in the Volcanic Drill
Cabildo President Rosa Dávila has stated, “This is not just about rehearsing protocols, but also about strengthening institutional coordination, emergency communication, and public prevention.”
The delegation was led by the President of the EU-MODEX LOT 4 Consortium, Bogdan Pop; the European Commission representative, Marcin Kedra; and Excon Staff member, Paul Rock.
The President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, today welcomed the heads of international working teams who will supervise, analyse, and study the island’s response during the volcanic risk drill taking place in the municipality of Garachico this Friday, the 26th, as part of the EU-MODEX Tenerife 2025 exercise.
During the reception, President Dávila stated, “With EU-MODEX Tenerife 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to Civil Protection and the safety of all who live on this island. This is not just about rehearsing protocols, but also about strengthening institutional coordination, emergency communication, and public prevention.”
The meeting was held at the Cecopin headquarters, where the President was joined by the Councillor for Natural Resources, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, and the Island Director of Security and Emergencies, Iván Martín. They welcomed the President of the EU-MODEX LOT 4 Consortium, Bogdan Pop; the representative from the European Commission, Marcin Kedra; and Excon Staff member, Paul Rock.
The European teams consist of 12 professionals and experts in Civil Protection, who play various roles to implement their skills in response to crises related to natural phenomena, in this case, the simulation of a volcanic eruption. It is noteworthy that these teams have no prior contact with each other, do not know one another, and operate completely autonomously, with the aim of providing an independent assessment of the response during the drill.
The President of the EU-MODEX LOT 4 Consortium, Bogdan Pop, expressed gratitude for the island’s readiness for an event of this scale, stating, “We know that Tenerife has made a tremendous effort in preparing for this drill, and all teams will work together over the coming days to achieve the best prevention against such a risk.”
Additionally, Dávila emphasised that “this exercise represents a unique opportunity to demonstrate our response capabilities in the event of a volcanic emergency, to learn from international experience, and to test, in a real environment, the readiness of our teams and the collaboration of various administrations.”
Over 1,000 Personnel Set to Gather on Friday, 26th in Garachico
The EU-MODEX Tenerife 2025 drill will bring together more than 1,000 national and international personnel, and will involve actions such as the partial evacuation of Garachico’s historic centre, assistance for individuals with reduced mobility, the management of temporary shelters, and the activation of the ES-ALERT warning system to the population. This message will be sent to the mobile phones of all residents and visitors on the island this Friday, the 26th, between 09:00 and 09:20, clearly identified as “DRILL.”
