Last Monday, the facilities of Club Deportivo Marino were specially prepared to welcome a project that aims to extend its influence beyond the football field. This initiative, titled “Estrella en la Calle”, is a parish programme that uses football as a bridge to provide socio-emotional workshops for children aged 6 to 12 who are in vulnerable situations.

Notable Guests Attend Launch

The presentation event was graced by several prominent figures, including the Bishop of Tenerife, Monseñor Eloy Alberto Santiago Santiago, who blessed the project and had the honour of taking the first kick. As a memento of his visit, the Bishop received a personalised club shirt, featuring his name and the number 10.

Also present were Francisco García Santamaría, President of CD Marino; Michael Bharwani, President of Rotary Club Tenerife Sur; and José Estévez Herrera, Parish Priest of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Los Cristianos. They all emphasised the power of sport as a fundamental tool for education and social cohesion.

Programme Structure

The programme is designed to strengthen a support network for families through activities that develop key skills in young participants. Each session is divided into two parts: one focused on football training and another dedicated to group dynamics, coordinated by psychologists. In these sessions, topics such as teamwork, assertive communication, conflict resolution, and empathy are addressed. Additionally, modules on the responsible use of new technologies, a current concern among children, are included.

Collaboration and Future Plans

“Estrella en la Calle” is made possible through a solid partnership among CD Marino, which provides its facilities and technical staff; the Parish of Nuestra Señora del Carmen – Los Cristianos, which fosters community ties; Rotary Club Tenerife Sur, which contributes resources and support; and a specialised psychology team. Currently, the project serves around thirty participants, with plans to expand to accommodate more children.
