Canary Islands Experience Heatwave and Dust Alert Until Friday

The Canary Islands are currently facing a heatwave and dust alert, which is expected to persist at least until Friday. The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has extended the yellow alerts in effect across the archipelago, although further modifications are possible. These alerts concern both high temperatures and dust, impacting all the islands.

Active Alerts Across the Islands

Tenerife

Tenerife has two active alerts. The first, for heat, remains in effect until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, and will reactivate on Thursday at 11:00 AM, continuing until 8:00 PM. A similar schedule applies to Friday. Initially, the entire island is affected, but the northern region will be exempt on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 34 degrees Celsius, particularly in mid-altitude areas and at elevations below 1,300 metres.

The dust alert applies to the entire island and is valid until 11:59 PM on Friday, with visibility expected to drop to just 3,000 metres.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria also faces two alerts. The first, for heat, is in place until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, reactivating on Thursday at 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM, and again on Friday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The entire island is affected, with temperatures anticipated to reach up to 36 degrees Celsius, particularly impacting the Tejeda basin and southern/western mid-altitudes. Local temperatures may reach as high as 37 degrees Celsius.

The dust alert is applicable across the island until 11:59 PM on Friday, also predicting visibility of only 3,000 metres.

La Palma

La Palma has two alerts. The heat alert is effective until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, with a reactivation on Thursday at 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM, and again on Friday for the same hours. This alert affects the western slopes and peaks of the island, where temperatures are expected to reach up to 34 degrees Celsius, particularly in mid-altitude areas below 1,300 metres.

The dust alert is valid across the entire island until 11:59 PM on Friday, with visibility forecasted at only 3,000 metres.

La Gomera

La Gomera has a similar situation, with two alerts in place. The heat warning remains active until 8:00 PM on Wednesday and reactivates at 11:00 AM on Thursday, remaining in effect until 8:00 PM on Friday. The entire island is expected to experience up to 34 degrees Celsius, particularly in mid-altitude and peak areas below 1,300 metres.

The dust alert is valid until 11:59 PM on Friday, with visibility at just 3,000 metres.

El Hierro

El Hierro also has two alerts. The heat alert is effective until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, and will reactivate at 11:00 AM on Thursday until 8:00 PM, and then on Friday under the same schedule. The alert applies to the entire island, with expected temperatures of up to 34 degrees Celsius, particularly in mid-altitude and summit areas below 1,300 metres.

The dust alert is applicable across the island until 11:59 PM on Friday, with visibility expected to be just 3,000 metres. In lower areas, concentrations may exceed 150 micrograms per cubic metre.

Lanzarote

Lanzarote has two active alerts as well. The heat alert is in effect until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, and reactivates at 11:00 AM on Thursday until 8:00 PM, and again on Friday for the same duration. The entire island is affected, particularly in inland areas and the southeast, where temperatures could reach as high as 34 degrees Celsius.

The dust alert remains in place, applicable to the whole island until 11:59 PM on Friday, with visibility at just 3,000 metres. In lower areas, dust concentrations may also exceed 150 micrograms per cubic metre.

Fuerteventura

The alert applies to the whole island, especially in interior regions and the southeast, with temperatures expected to reach up to 34 degrees Celsius.
