Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura Welcomes Shift on Telecommunications Tower Decision
Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura appreciates that ministers Óscar López and Ángel Víctor Torres align with the stance of the President of the Canary Government, Fernando Clavijo, to dismiss the proposed location for the telecommunications tower intended for installation in Antigua. This change of direction by the current mayor will enable the exploration of a new site that does not inconvenience residents.
Following recent communications about negotiations with the company Tótem Towers in Madrid, the nationalist party celebrates that the Mayor of Antigua “has reconsidered and rejected the site that initially favoured unilateral discussions with the telecommunications company”.
Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura has consistently advocated for “the search for an alternative location, further from residential areas, and emphasised exhausting dialogue with the company”. Therefore, “we are grateful that a response has finally been made to both the demands of the local residents and the requests of our political group”.
Above all, the team of AM–CC highlights the perseverance of the people of Antigua “for their tireless fight against what they deemed an unfair action”. “They have continued to insist on preventing this infrastructure from being installed at the proposed site, merely 50 metres from homes, due to the potential issues it could cause,” the island executive reaffirms.
Moreover, they acknowledge the efforts of their councillors in the municipality, led by David Alberto Guerra, who initiated discussions with the President of the Canary Government, Fernando Clavijo. On August 13, Manolo Miranda, representing the president, held an initial meeting with TÓTEM to explore alternatives. Since then, Manolo Miranda, Lola García, and David Alberto have been working together, under technical advice, to find a “technically viable new location away from the village”.
Thus, AM-CC considers it a success that both the Canary Government, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and now also the Town Hall of Antigua “are working in unison”. “This will facilitate the process for both the administrations and the technicians to respond to the local population,” they add.
The Cabildo Is Working on Alternatives to the Initial Location
Regarding potential new sites, the island corporation, led by Lola García, has begun the procedures to make land available in the La Cerquita area, near the ITV, and is also negotiating to purchase land around the water tank in Antigua. Both locations are technically viable for the installation of the telecommunications tower, making them suitable candidates for proposal to the company.
However, the political group asserts that these alternatives will be open to community consensus, as well as to new suggestions that may be put forward by the residents. For the AM-CC team, “this new period represents an opportunity to secure a location that is supported by both the administrations and the people of Antigua”.
