Call for Action on La Cerquita Rural Fire Station

The spokesperson for AMF in the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret, has condemned the Cabildo for delaying the construction of the La Cerquita Rural Fire Station in Antigua. This project is poised to occupy a plot of over 15,000 m² which is already designated for this purpose. AMF demands that the Cabildo proceed with the La Cerquita Rural Fire Station

This fire station is intended to serve more than 180,000 residents and tourists across the municipalities of Antigua, Tuineje, and Betancuria, areas currently lacking their own fire stations and reliant on scattered insular resources.

At present, the only insular fire station serving this area is located in El Cuchillete. This situation necessitates lengthy travel times, resulting in insufficient response times for fires, accidents, or rural and coastal emergencies. “The safety of thousands of citizens is at risk every minute this station remains unbuilt,” asserts Lloret.

Lloret also notes that the Cabildo previously spent over €600,000 in the last term to acquire the La Cerquita plot, publicly showcasing the project as part of the “Your Safety Closer” initiative. “Today, that commitment is merely a piece of paper and the station remains unconstructed,” he criticises.

Furthermore, Lloret criticises the Cabildo for awarding a contract of nearly €40,000 for drafting the Municipal Emergency Plans (PEMU) for Antigua, Tuineje, and Betancuria, while failing to implement the infrastructure that would provide real support. “Documents on paper are worthless if there are no tangible resources to apply them,” he states.

“Every day this station remains closed constitutes a political decision that endangers the lives of citizens both inland and on the coast,” concludes Lloret.

The AMF motion is set to be debated in the ordinary full council meeting of the Cabildo scheduled for 26 September at 09:00, in the chamber of the Corporation.
