The project, with a budget of €215.9 million, is included in the Canary Islands–State Road Agreement 2018-2027

The initiative, part of the Canary Islands–State Road Agreement 2018-2027, will run between the municipalities of Puerto del Rosario and Antigua. Its aim is to connect and extend the North-South Corridor of the island, improving mobility and enhancing road safety. The project is expected to take five years to complete, with a budget of €215.9 million spread across several years.

Councillor Pablo Rodríguez has emphasised that “the new link will improve connections between the airport, the main tourist areas, and urban centres in the central and southern parts of Fuerteventura, contributing to the economic and social development of the island, access to services, and the mobility of residents and visitors.”

In this regard, he noted that “the section between the airport and Pozo Negro will feature a tunnel of over one kilometre due to environmental considerations, making it the first of its kind to be constructed in Fuerteventura. This project will provide the island’s network with a modern and efficient infrastructure, promoting more sustainable mobility.”

The bidding process will commence shortly, aiming for publication on the bidding platform this year, pending necessary procedures.

The Project

The project includes the construction of four main links: the Airport Link, which will connect to the FV-2 and service the main air access point on the island; the El Castillo Link, connecting to the FV-413 towards the tourist and urban areas of Caleta de Fuste, Triquivijate, and Antigua; the Las Salinas Link, maintaining the existing connection with the FV-2 and the south of Caleta de Fuste; and the Pozo Negro Roundabout, which will resolve the intersection with the FV-50 towards Agua de Bueyes and Antigua.

Among the notable infrastructure works is the construction of a 1.2-kilometre tunnel located between the 9+230 and 10+430 kilometre points, which will include false start and end tunnels. Additionally, a 190-metre viaduct will be erected over the Torre ravine, with various structures projected at the Airport and El Castillo links, along with an overpass at Las Salinas and three underpasses to maintain continuity for rural roads and access.

In this context, the General Director of Road Infrastructure, Rosana Melián, has explained that this will be the first project approved to incorporate renewable energy installations. The goal is to cover the total electricity consumption for the new lighting network with photovoltaic panels, making the installation energy-neutral and self-sustainable, thus contributing to decarbonisation and reduced emissions into the atmosphere. The areas targeted will include the lighting of the new Airport and El Castillo links, with installations of 19 and 22 panels respectively, as well as the new tunnel lighting, where 41 panels will be installed in the median of the road.
