Approval for Third Lane on TF-5
The Tenerife Cabildo has received a favourable report from the Government of the Canary Islands for a project that will allow the construction of a third lane on the TF-5 heading towards Santa Cruz, in the segment between Guamasa and Tenerife Norte Airport.
The island president, Rosa Dávila, welcomed the administrative advance, which she described as “a decisive step” in addressing one of the main demands from citizens: improving the most trafficked road on the island. “The project’s approval brings us closer to a key construction that will reduce travel times, enhance road safety, and contribute to the territorial cohesion of Tenerife,” she stated.
Institutional Coordination and Objectives
Dávila also emphasised the collaboration between administrations, highlighting that the coordination between the regional government and the Cabildo has been “essential to unlock a strategic project that had been pending for years”. With this support, the Cabildo hopes to make a significant leap towards a more sustainable and efficient mobility in the metropolitan area.
The project has a base bidding budget of 66.4 million euros (including IGIC) and an execution period of 35 months. It already has a favourable Environmental Impact Declaration and positive reports regarding safety and health, ensuring the viability of the operation.
Details of the Construction
The planned works include:
- Improvements to the pavement, drainage, and intersections.
- The construction of five structures.
- The replacement of affected services.
- The implementation of environmental and road safety measures.
During the works, traffic continuity will be ensured, reinforcing the functionality and efficiency of the northern metropolitan corridor.
The affected route extends from the current Guamasa junction (P.K. 15+000) to the San Lázaro interchange (P.K. 11+400), where three lanes already exist heading towards Santa Cruz. The total length of the intervention will be 3.6 kilometres, one of the areas with the highest traffic density and accident rate on the TF-5.
Next Steps
Following the project’s approval, the Government of Canarias will expedite the bidding for the works and the execution plan, aiming for construction to begin as soon as possible.
