Arrecife Celebrates the Feast of San Ginés

On Monday, 25 August, Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, celebrated one of its most emblematic days with the festivities in honour of San Ginés, the patron saint of the city. The morning was filled with fervour and tradition, as liturgical and popular events took place around the main church of San Ginés, a 16th-century temple designated as a Cultural Asset of Interest with Monument status, which was bedecked beautifully for the occasion.

The three naves of the church were splendidly decorated with floral arrangements in shades of red, matching the colour of the throne that held the venerated image of the Patron Saint. These arrangements were created by local resident Francisco Hernández and his family, who contribute their artistry and devotion to this special event each year.

At noon, the Solemn Eucharist commenced, presided over by Father Aday Josué García Jiménez, the parish priest of San Diego de Alcalá (Tuineje) and Archpriest of Fuerteventura. Ten priests participated in the celebration, including the parish priest of San Ginés, Juan Carlos Medina. The ceremony was musically accompanied by the ‘Parish Choir’, which included the participation of the congregation under the direction of Professor José Juan López Umpierrez, adding further emotion to the occasion.

During the homily, the presiding priest addressed the attendees with heartfelt words, reflecting on the life and legacy of San Ginés as a model of faith, commitment, and service. Civil and military authorities occupied a prominent position in one of the side naves of the church.

Before concluding the Eucharist, Father Juan Carlos Medina expressed his gratitude to all collaborators for their efforts and dedication, essential for the festival to be celebrated with the dignity it deserves. The Eucharist wrapped up with the singing of the “Hymn of San Ginés”, which was enthusiastically joined by the congregation.

The tolling of bells announced the start of the traditional procession. The image of the Patron Saint exited the church doors amidst applause, commencing its journey through the main streets of Arrecife. The procession was led by the Banda de Música La Unión Musical de Lanzarote, under the direction of Professor Pepe Artiles, followed by the celebrating priests, authorities, and numerous faithful who solemnly accompanied the image of the Patron Saint.

Upon returning to the church, San Ginés was once again received with applause and the tolling of bells, marking the conclusion of a day filled with deep devotion and community participation, reaffirming the bond between the people of Arrecife and their Patron.
