The Arrecife City Council is introducing a new public mobility service with electric bicycles. The municipal government, headed by Mayor Yonathan de León, is already in the process of installing nine charging stations located in different areas of the capital of Lanzarote.
The Department of Transport and Mobility, under the direction of Mario González Altube, has published the official tender on the Public Sector Contracting Platform for the drafting of new regulations that will govern this service. These regulations will include the fiscal criteria for the use of this new sustainable transport service, free from smoke and noise, in the capital of Lanzarote. The official tender notice was published on 27 August.
During a visit to one of these electric bicycle charging stations near the new pedestrian area adjacent to Playa de El Reducto, Mayor Yonathan de León and Councillor Mario González Altube provided updates on the implementation of this new system. It aims to enhance the municipal public transport systems and encourage both residents and visitors to use urban buses and bicycles for city travel. Arrecife, being close to the sea and largely flat, offers significant advantages for bicycle use as an urban mobility solution.
The justification report for the need to contract and the objectives set by the City Council of Arrecife for this tender highlights the commitment to establishing an electric bicycle system as part of a determined effort to promote sustainable, accessible, and innovative mobility within the urban environment of Arrecife. This type of service will directly contribute to reducing motorised traffic and harmful emissions by providing a clean, efficient transport alternative that meets citizens’ needs, particularly in a city like Arrecife, which features straightforward topography and short commuting distances.
Councillor for Transport and Mobility, Mario González, emphasised that among the main benefits of this bicycle system is its ability to integrate with other public transport modes, thus improving air quality, reducing noise pollution, and promoting healthier lifestyles.
Moreover, as these are electric bicycles, the potential user base is significantly expanded, overcoming barriers related to physical exertion or age. It is noteworthy that this initiative, which positions Arrecife as a pioneer municipality on the island of Lanzarote, projects a modern image of the city aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is expected to act as a catalyst for urban transformation, enhancing connectivity among areas and improving the quality of life for residents.
Currently, the Arrecife City Council is completing the installation of nine bicycle charging points and has procured approximately sixty pedal-assisted electric bicycles through a public tender. These initiatives are supported by the second call of the “Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU”.
The Arrecife City Council informs that firms or professionals wishing to apply for this tender for the technical development of the regulations have until 12 September 2025, by 14:00 hours.
