Arrecife Invests €4 Million in Modernising Urban Public Transport with New Buses

The Councillor for Transport and Mobility, Mario González Altube, has announced that the tender for the purchase of two new large buses will be released in the coming weeks. This initiative aims to complete the fleet renewal during the current administration, which will add a total of eight new buses.

Modernisation of Public Transport

The Arrecife Municipal Government, led by Mayor Yonathan de León, is implementing a plan aimed at modernising and enhancing the efficiency of public bus services in the capital of Lanzarote. Over the past two years, nearly €4 million has been invested in renewing the fleet of Urban Buses, marking the largest investment in the city’s history.

Mayor de León has highlighted that the modernisation of the fleet—some units of which are over 20 years old—has been a priority for his administration. Each year since 2023, significant budget allocations have been made for the acquisition of new buses, according to the municipal budget managed by the Mayor’s office.

New Buses to Enhance Service

From the Department of Mobility and Transport, under Councillor Mario González Altube, the first images of four new buses, tendered by Arrecife City Council at the end of 2024, have been shared on social media. These buses are currently in the final assembly phase and are expected to enter service by the end of this autumn. The new buses will be powered by electric energy, with an investment of nearly €2 million. Official tenders for such vehicles generally have a manufacturing time of approximately one year.

Mario González Altube emphasises that the addition of these four new units, alongside the two already launched in December last year, will strengthen public transport in Arrecife. This enhancement will feature more routes, shorter travel times, improved schedules, and services tailored to the mobility needs of the population, which now exceeds 72,000 residents.

Future Tenders for Accessible Buses

González Altube has revealed that his department is finalising a new tender for the purchase of two additional large buses, which will also be fully accessible, similar to the two units launched last December and those currently being manufactured. For this new tender, the City Council has allocated a budget of €1 million.

Significant Investment in Urban Buses

In total, the Arrecife Municipal Government, under Mayor Yonathan de León, has invested approximately €4 million in the renewal and modernisation of the Urban Bus fleet during this initial period of their mandate. This initiative has enabled the introduction of eight new buses: two that entered service in December, four that have already been awarded and will be received this autumn, and a tender scheduled for the coming weeks for the acquisition of two additional large units.
