The Arrecife City Council is set to launch a new public mobility service featuring electric bicycles. The municipal government announced on Tuesday that it is already installing nine bike stations with charging points across different areas of the capital of Lanzarote.
The Department of Transport and Mobility, led by Mario González Altube, has officially published the tender for the drafting of new regulations that will govern this service, including fiscal criteria for the use of this sustainable transportation option, which is free from emissions and noise. The official tender notice was published on 27 August.
The Mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, and Councillor Mario González Altube informed on Tuesday during a visit to one of these electric bike charging stations, located near the new pedestrian area by El Reducto beach, about the implementation of this new system. This initiative aims to enhance the public transport systems in the city, promoting the use of urban buses and bicycles among residents and visitors for their journeys. Arrecife’s coastal location and flat terrain provide numerous advantages for using bicycles as a mode of urban mobility.
The justifying report on the need for contracting and the objectives set by the Arrecife City Council for this tender highlights the establishment of an electric bike system as a firm commitment to sustainable, accessible, and innovative mobility within the urban environment. This type of service will directly contribute to reducing motorised traffic and pollutant emissions by offering a clean, efficient transportation alternative tailored to the needs of citizens, especially in a city like Arrecife with its uncomplicated topography and short travel distances.
Councillor for Transport and Mobility, Mario González, detailed that one of the main benefits of this bike system is its potential integration with other forms of public transport. This will improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and encourage healthy lifestyle habits.
Moreover, as these are electric bicycles, the range of potential users is expanded, removing barriers related to physical effort or age. It is noteworthy that such systems, where Arrecife becomes a pioneer municipality on the island of Lanzarote, promote a modern image of the city committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), acting as a catalyst for urban transformation, unifying regions, and improving the quality of life for its residents.
Currently, the Arrecife City Council is completing the installation of nine bike charging points and has procured approximately sixty electric bicycles through a public tender. These initiatives have benefitted from the second round of the “Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan – Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.”
The Arrecife City Council informs that firms or professionals wishing to apply for this tender for the technical development of the regulations can do so until 12 September 2025, at 14:00.
