Arrecife Mayor Announces Police Staff Increase and New Vehicle Acquisition to Enhance Security

The Mayor of Arrecife confirms that the Local Police Force will undergo further modernisation, with more officers and resources, in the second half of the term

The Mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, continues to enhance surveillance and security in the city with plans to increase police personnel and acquire new vehicles to strengthen police presence in the neighbourhoods around the clock.

The increase in the Local Police workforce is included in the recent Public Employment Offer, approved this past summer, with a focus now on equipping the police force with additional resources and vehicles.

The Arrecife City Council has announced on the Public Sector Procurement Platform the tender, from the Mayor’s Office of Arrecife, for the purchase of 3 patrol vehicles, a police pickup, a van for interventions, and 3 police motorcycles, with an investment nearing half a million euros. This new tender, aimed at expanding the police fleet, is divided into 4 lots with the deadline for submitting financial and technical offers set for 6 October.

Yonathan de León has detailed that following this tender, companies will have a period of up to 5 months, according to the administrative specifications, to deliver these new units of vehicles and motorcycles. The introduction of this new fleet is expected by late spring 2026.

It will be a criterion in this official tender that supplying companies promote the employment of individuals facing particular difficulties in the job market.

Arrecife is adding this new phase of modernisation to that which commenced two years ago, which has transformed the capital of Lanzarote into one of the municipalities with the largest police fleet among peripheral island capitals in both the Balearic and Canary Islands. Several vehicles recently introduced by the Local Police of Arrecife are camouflaged, enhancing effectiveness in monitoring and surveillance in sensitive areas of Arrecife, where the population exceeds 72,000 residents.

From rental cars to a modern fleet

The Mayor of Arrecife has reminded that just a few years ago, the Local Police made headlines for patrolling in rental cars due to an unusable fleet. Now, they rank among the most technologically advanced police forces in the Canary Islands, with police vehicles, a control centre equipped with video cameras, and coordination with other Law Enforcement Bodies, which has allowed the city of Arrecife to achieve a significant reduction in crime rates, particularly in drug-related offences, theft, and burglaries. During the past six months, Arrecife stands out as the only municipality in Lanzarote, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior, that has reduced these criminal activities.
