The Mayor, Yonathan de León, plans to increase green areas in Arrecife by 280,000 m2 with the new Supplementary Plan for new parks

The Parks and Gardens Department, led by Councillor Roberto Herbón, is investing over €800,000 to implement this new system

The city of Arrecife is set to undergo a significant transformation in its green spaces during the latter part of its current term. The Arrecife City Council has put out to tender a new irrigation network for green areas, which will service existing parks and wooded areas, as well as supply irrigation for new parks and regions that the Municipal Government, led by Mayor Yonathan de León, is planning.

Currently, the existing network is not operational, has numerous deficiencies, and does not meet the current or future needs for the regular maintenance of green areas in Lanzarote’s capital. Mayor Yonathan de León has detailed that with this tender, the City Council plans to triple the number of trees and create new green spaces in the city’s neighbourhoods. With the new Supplementary Plan, which has already received initial approval, the city will expand green areas by 280,000 m2 for new parks.

Five eco-boulevards, more trees, and better gardens

Yonathan de León has announced that the City Council has already planned the comprehensive transformation of five main arteries, where five eco-boulevards featuring extensive green walkways will be created. One of them has already begun, with the first phase completed last year, involving the renovation of a section of Calle Manolo Millares, which will be expanded in a second phase, with the technical project nearing its final drafting stage.

Planned under the direction of Councillor Roberto Herbón, the Parks and Gardens Department aims to establish a new network that addresses current and future needs, transforming Arrecife’s image to become a city with more shade and sustainability.

The Arrecife City Council has published the official tender for “Improvement of the reclaimed water irrigation network for the municipality of Arrecife” on the Sector Contracting Platform, with an investment exceeding €800,000 from the Parks and Gardens Department, led by Councillor Roberto Herbón. Interested companies have until 29 September to submit their economic and technical proposals for this new project, with a base tender budget of €836,570.05.

Technical details of the new irrigation network

According to the technical project, prepared by an agricultural technical engineer, the central axis of this new irrigation network will start from the old wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) of Arrecife, located on the San Bartolomé road, near the bypass and in proximity to the Lanzarote General Hospital. This network will cover the most populated areas of Arrecife, specifically the neighbourhoods of Argana Alta and Argana Baja. From that location, a main network will branch out, along with distribution chambers within the primary and secondary networks, as well as the setup of an irrigation and chemical supply chamber.

The technical documentation specifies that “the city of Arrecife lacks an irrigation network that meets the needs of its green areas. This project aims to supply quality reclaimed water to the majority of parks, gardens, and other green spaces in the city, where there is currently no access to the network, insufficient flow, or pressure.” The network will run around the perimeter from the Arrecife Bypass, allowing for the distribution of all irrigation branches to existing gardens and parks, as well as new proposed areas.

Robert Herbón has emphasised that with the construction of this new irrigation network, expected to be completed within six months, there will be an increase in tree planting and green areas, which is the central objective of his department to enhance the urban image of Arrecife, where citizens have been advocating for more trees.

Robert Herbón has reminded that the construction of the new underwater discharge network and the increase of flow at the EDAR in Montaña Mina (ongoing works with an investment exceeding €13 million) will provide us with “the raw material for irrigation,” which is treated water, along with a new irrigation network to reach current and future green spaces.
