Arrecife Police Enhance Presence to Combat Drug Issues in Youth-Frequented Public Spaces

The area known as Parque de los Pinos is under constant surveillance by the Local Police following concerns raised by residents.

The Local Police of Arrecife continues to enhance its presence in sensitive areas of the city to tackle drug sales and consumption in public spaces, particularly those frequented by young people.

Prioritising Public Safety

The Mayor of the city, Yonathan de León, who oversees the Local Police, has identified the prevention of drug-related issues in parks and public areas as one of his key safety priorities. He aims to curb the activities of certain individuals known for selling drugs and to reduce substance abuse among the youth.

Local officers maintain a surveillance line in specific hotspots where residents have raised concerns, coupled with police investigations using unmarked vehicles and undercover agents.

Increased Patrols Ahead of New School Year

This week, as the new academic year approaches, several local police patrols have carried out preventive checks in various sensitive areas of Arrecife, including the well-known Parque Los Pinos in the Titerroy neighbourhood.

The Mayor confirmed that the Local Police will consistently continue these preventive deployments, along with many more direct interventions upon receiving alerts from residents regarding specific locations.

Reduction in Crime Rates

The Local Police of Arrecife, in collaboration with the National Police, has successfully reduced criminal offences, particularly those related to drug trafficking, significantly during the first quarter of 2025. These notable improvements in Arrecife’s safety stand in contrast to rising crime rates in other municipalities across Lanzarote, according to official statistics released by the Ministry of the Interior this week.

In recent months, the Local Police successfully identified a drug dealer using police drones, employing preventive measures with unmarked cars and plainclothes officers.

Commitment to Enhanced Law Enforcement

Yonathan de León emphasised that the Local Police will remain steadfast in its efforts, supported by new equipment and technological resources acquired in recent months, which place it among the most advanced police forces in the Canary Islands.
