The Local Police of Arrecife continues to strengthen its presence in sensitive areas of the city to combat the sale and consumption of drugs in public spaces, particularly where adolescents gather.
The city’s mayor, Yonathan de León, who is directly responsible for the Local Police, stated in a press release on Saturday that one of his ongoing priorities for security and prevention is to ensure that parks and public spaces are not used by “certain dealers” for drug sales, while also working to curb drug use among the youth.
The local officers maintain a surveillance line in specific sensitive areas of Arrecife based on alerts from residents, alongside police investigations involving unmarked vehicles and undercover officers.

During this week, in anticipation of the new academic year, several patrols from the Local Police have conducted preventive checks in various sensitive areas of Arrecife, including the well-known Los Pinos Park in the Titerroy neighbourhood.
The Local Police, as confirmed by the mayor, will continue these preventive deployments regularly, as well as carry out more direct interventions following alerts from residents in certain locations.
Together with the National Police, the Local Police of Arrecife has achieved a significant decrease in criminal offences during the first quarter of 2025, including those related to drug trafficking. These notable results in Arrecife, promoting safety in the city, stand in contrast to the rise in similar offences in other municipalities of Lanzarote, according to official statistics from the Ministry of the Interior released this week.
In recent months, the Local Police of Arrecife identified a dealer using police drones, conducting preventive operations with unmarked vehicles and officers in plain clothes.
Yonathan de León emphasised that the Local Police will remain persistent with further deployments supported by new equipment and technological resources acquired in recent months, making it one of the most well-equipped and technologically advanced police forces in the Canary Islands.
