Arrecife Local Police Heightens Efforts Against Drug Trafficking
The Local Police of Arrecife is increasing its presence in sensitive areas of the city to prevent drug dealing and usage, particularly in spaces frequented by teenagers.
Mayor’s Commitment to Public Safety
Yonathan de León, the Mayor of Arrecife and the police’s direct supervisor, has reiterated that one of his top priorities regarding security is to ensure that parks and public spaces are not used by drug dealers or become youth consumption points.
Enhanced Police Patrols
This week, coinciding with the start of the new school year, several patrols have established preventive controls in various areas of the city, including Parque Los Pinos in the Titerroy neighbourhood. These operations are supported by both uniformed officers and undercover policing efforts.
Ongoing Operations and Community Feedback
The Mayor confirmed that these deployments will be maintained consistently, supplemented by immediate actions in response to residents’ alerts. He also noted that collaboration between the Local Police and the National Police has led to a significant reduction in drug-related crimes during the first quarter of 2025 in Arrecife, a positive development compared to increases recorded in other municipalities across Lanzarote, according to official figures from the Ministry of the Interior.
Advanced Technology in Policing
In recent months, the Local Police have incorporated new technologies, such as drones, which have already enabled the identification of dealers in the city. With these tools, alongside recent material and logistical reinforcements, the police force in Arrecife positions itself among the most advanced in the Canary Islands.
