Betancort: “The legacy of our elderly community is also the oral memory that must be preserved to avoid its loss”
The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Historical Heritage Service, is promoting the oral memory of the island’s elderly and those from La Graciosa with the innovative project ‘Tales from the Canarian Grandparents’. This initiative aims to preserve the linguistic and expressive wealth of the regional oral heritage.
The project will collect audio recordings to encourage active listening and respect for the elderly community, while also providing visitors to the archipelago with a deep and authentic understanding of its identity.
Valuing the Elderly
The president of the Corporation and head of the Area, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasises the need to connect the Lanzarote society with the value of belonging and recognition found in the elderly. “Their experiences reflect the fragility, durability, and belonging of our territory. The legacy of our elderly community is also the oral memory that must be preserved,” he stresses.
Launching the Project
Betancort further clarifies, “This pioneering project in the Canaries will be launched this September and will be actively promoted in cultural and educational spaces such as museums, tourist offices, and visitor centres, among others. These recordings can also be played in educational institutions, where teaching resources will be developed for use in primary and secondary schools.”
The ‘Tales from the Canarian Grandparents’ project will be executed for the Cabildo of Lanzarote by the Association of Businesswomen, Entrepreneurs, Professionals, and Executives Charter 100 Canarias.
