This Friday morning marked the ceremony for the XIV edition of the Mercedes Medina Díaz Scholarships, where 15 students received the initial portion of financial aid to pursue their studies at various Spanish universities during the 2025/2026 academic year.

The event, held at the Insular Library, was attended by families, institutional representatives, and local business leaders.

Institutional Support and Commitment to Youth

During the award ceremony, Councillor Ascensión Toledo emphasised the significance of this social project and the collaboration between the Cabildo and the Association:

“We congratulate the awarded students and their families and express our gratitude to the AMMD for keeping alive the memory of an exemplary teacher, transforming her legacy into real opportunities for our youth. Furthermore, we are firmly committed to continuing our collaboration with this Association for the benefit of the young people of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.”

This edition has reached a historic total of €54,000, thanks to AMMD’s own resources and the support of numerous businesses and patrons. Each student will receive a total of €3,600 over the academic year, with an initial payment of €400 already distributed.

The call for applications attracted nearly 50 submissions, reflecting the growing need and prestige of this scholarship programme.

Ensuring No Talent is Wasted

The president of the AMMD, Juan Cruz Sepúlveda, highlighted the purpose of the initiative:

“The Mercedes Medina scholarships aim to ensure that no talent from Lanzarote or La Graciosa goes to waste due to lack of financial resources. Thanks to the renewed and strengthened support from our patrons, we have achieved a record level of funding that allows us to provide more and better assistance.”

From the City Council of Arrecife, Councillor for Citizen Participation, Cathaysa Suárez, spoke on behalf of the Education representative, Abigail González. Suárez underscored that the scholarships “represent a commitment to equal opportunities and the talent of our youth. We congratulate the awarded students and express our gratitude to the Association and collaborating businesses for keeping this invaluable project alive.”

The event was led by the vice-president of the Association, Carmen Rosa Márquez, and included the presence of Mónica Ramírez, General Director of Personnel and Teacher Training of the Canary Islands Education Department.

A Living Legacy in Favour of Education

The Mercedes Medina Díaz Association was founded in honour of Lanzarote teacher Doña Mercedes Medina, known for her commitment to education and motivating her students towards personal and academic improvement. The initiative was spearheaded by her daughter, María Mercedes Maura Manuela Palarea Medina, and has since established itself as a leading educational support reference on the island.

Through this scholarship programme, the AMMD keeps alive the legacy of an exemplary teacher, ensuring that financial limitations do not impede the university education of future generations.

In 2024, the Cabildo of Lanzarote recognised the Association’s efforts with the Jameo de Oro Award for Education.
