The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has denounced “a new episode of waste and opacity” by the island’s president, Oswaldo Betancort, regarding a recent trip to Texas which they claim will cost over €250,000 of public funds. They assert that the contract was managed through a privately awarded company, a model that obscures the actual breakdown of expenses and their specific applications.

The spokesperson for the Socialist Group, Ariagona González, reminded that the Cabildo is in technical bankruptcy, a situation that has already forced the cancellation of projects and commitments made to the public.

“It is an absolute incoherence: while initiatives are suspended due to lack of funds, Betancort finds over a quarter of a million euros for a trip to Texas. The island is facing a water crisis, a housing emergency, and cuts to essential services, yet the island’s president prefers to allocate funds to political marketing.”

González warns that this outsourcing system secures access to crucial information such as invoices, fees, travel expenses, per diems, production costs, or logistical expenses, thereby reducing transparency and hindering public scrutiny.

“A private company is selected specifically to conceal how every euro is spent. This is not an isolated incident; it is a pattern of opacity. There is no documented return for the island, no serious economic report, nor measurable objectives. Only propaganda funded by public money while the Cabildo admits it cannot meet its commitments,” concluded the Socialist spokesperson.
