Cabildo de Lanzarote Opens €60,000 Supported Facility for Increasing Autonomy of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

The President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, along with the Councillor for Social Welfare, Marci Acuña, and the Deputy Councillor for Social Welfare of the Government of the Canary Islands, Francisco Candil, visited the preparation flat for adult life and family respite run by the Creciendo Social Association in Playa Blanca.

Financial Support and Purpose

This facility, which has already welcomed over 30 individuals since its launch, has received approved funding of €60,000 from the Cabildo of Lanzarote for 2025. It is a space designed to promote the independence of individuals with intellectual disabilities while providing relief for their families, allowing temporary stays in an adapted environment with professional support.

Project Recognition

Oswaldo Betancort emphasised that this project “is no longer a pilot scheme, but a reality in Lanzarote”. He stated, “This house provides the autonomy these individuals need for their daily lives.” He also congratulated the professionals at the Association “for offering a better quality of life to the people of Lanzarote.”

Family Respite and Inclusion

Meanwhile, Councillor Marci Acuña reiterated that this is “a flat for family respite and for the emancipation process of individuals with intellectual disabilities.” He added that it “has proven effective and aligns perfectly with the Island Strategy for Accessibility and Inclusion, as well as with the care policies and excellence in attention that the Island Institution works on daily.”

Acuña highlighted the role played by associations like this in improving family well-being and insisted on the Cabildo’s collaboration with such initiatives that consolidate a fundamental support network in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

Ongoing Commitment

Through the Social Welfare Area, the Cabildo of Lanzarote remains committed to supporting individuals with disabilities and their families through various innovative projects on the island. Among these initiatives is the supervised flat by Adislan, also aimed at preparing for independent living and supporting the transition to adult life for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Broadening Social Initiatives

These resources complement other social actions such as strengthening dependency care programmes, investing in new residential and day centres, and providing financial support to third-sector entities that work towards inclusion.
